Lawn Watering

Lawn watering uses a significant portion of Eden Prairie's water supply.

It is very important that residents and businesses follow the City's ordinance to ensure there is enough water for all uses, including vital services such as fighting fires.

Watering Schedule

City Ordinance Chapter 3.3 §12 states that residents and businesses can water on an odd/even system.

If your address ends with an odd number, then you can water on odd-numbered days of the month. If your address ends in an even number, then you can water on even-numbered days of the month.

No lawn watering is allowed between the hours of noon and 5 p.m., even if you have an exemption for new sod or landscaping.

Fines

Fines for violating water use restrictions are determined by the number of water restriction violations issued to the owner in the previous three years, and are as follows:

  • First offense — $25
  • Second offense — $50
  • Third offense — $100
  • Fourth offense — $200
  • Each additional offense (five or more) — $300

Watering restrictions are enforced year-round and violators will be fined. No warnings are given for violation of lawn watering restrictions.

Exemptions

Private wells are exempt from the City ordinance. Play toys, car washing and hand watering of flower beds are also exempt, as long as the activity is attended.

Residents/HOAs/commercial properties can apply for a 30-day exemption from the odd/even watering restriction because of new grass seed, sod or plantings.

  • Exemptions are for a total of 30 days only
  • 1 exemption granted annually per address

HOAs or commercial properties can request an alternate watering schedule.

  • Not applicable for individual residents
  • Provides flexible watering schedule
  • Overall water usage not to exceed 15 days per month
  • Written confirmation from City required prior to alternate schedule taking effect
