Living With Canada Geese
Many enjoy Canada Geese as part of Eden Prairie’s natural environment. However, an overabundant goose population can become a nuisance as well as a public health and safety hazard. Goose droppings not only reduce the attractiveness of local parks and beaches but also negatively affect the quality of water, making it unsafe for swimming.
What is the City Doing?
The City of Eden Prairie has a two-fold approach — education and population management. Techniques the City uses include:
- Community education
- Modification of natural habitat where feasible
- Management of population growth through removal of geese using trained professionals
What Can I Do?
There are a variety of methods Eden Prairie residents can use to manage geese:
- Convert shoreline areas to tall, native grasses, shrubs or other plants with a minimum width of 20 feet
- Don't feed the geese; this leads to not only a gathering of more geese in one neighborhood, but can also affect the health of the geese since they don’t eat a diverse, native diet
- Erect scare tape, whirly-gigs or goose fences at the edges of shorelines and move or switch them out frequently
- Report aggressive geese to the City for removal
Goose-related complaints can be filed for:
- Significant damage to shoreland plants
- Fouling of decks, sidewalks, docks and rafts
- Attacking pets, children, elderly and others
- Walking or flying into traffic
File a goose complaint or request assistance with wildlife management
