Eden Prairie, Minn. – As part of the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program, the City of Eden Prairie was recognized for becoming a Step 3 City at the League of Minnesota Cities Conference June 20. Eden Prairie achieved this milestone by completing 17 of 28 best practices.
The City of Eden Prairie has been striving to become an energy-efficient community for several years, beginning with the launch of the 20-40-15 initiative in 2006. The program calls for the City to improve energy efficiency in its facilities by 20 percent, increase the fuel efficiency of its vehicle fleet by 40 percent and accomplish these goals by the year 2015.
Soon after the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program began in 2010, the Conservation Commission recommended to the City Council that Eden Prairie participate so the City’s existing energy-efficiency efforts would be broadened to include sustainability practices.
“This award is a great achievement,” said Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens. “By being part of the program, the City of Eden Prairie and our 66 peer cities are helping to secure Minnesota’s natural beauty while also helping our cities thrive economically and socially.”
Minnesota GreenStep Cities is a challenge, assistance and recognition program. As one of 67 participating cities, Eden Prairie is helping to lead the way in sustainably across the state of Minnesota. Actions that are taken within the program focus on cost savings, energy use reduction and the encouragement of civic innovation.
