Organics Recycling

About 25% of what we throw away is organic material that could be put to better use as compost.

Minnesotans throw away over 3-million tons of waste each year. About one-fourth of our trash is organic materials, including food, food-soiled paper, and certified compostable products that end up in landfills. Organics recycling is the best opportunity to reduce our trash and put it to better use as compost, a nutrient-rich material that is used in landscaping and road construction projects to improve our soil.

Organics Recycling Charge Requirement

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recently clarified Minnesota State Statute 115A.93 prohibits waste haulers from imposing a greater charge on residents who recycle organic materials than on those who do not.

Therefore, waste haulers must charge all residential customers a fee for curbside organics recycling collection regardless of participation status.

Organics recycling carts are only provided upon request. Residents may choose to not request a cart but cannot opt out of the organics recycling charge.
