Storage and Utility Box Wraps

Since 2018, with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Eden Prairie Community Foundation, the City has transformed athletic storage and utility boxes into permanent public art.

Each design comes from a Minnesota artist chosen through an application process. This artwork allows the City to beautify functional items that typically stick out as an eyesore in otherwise well-maintained and attractive park settings. Covering the boxes with weather-resistant material that serves as a canvas for artwork extends the life of the equipment and, more importantly, allows for the discovery of art in what many would consider unexpected places — athletic complexes.

The project meets several City Council goals, including Sense of Community, Preserved and Beautiful Environment, and Innovative and Sustainable Practices, as well as goals set out in the City’s comprehensive plan, Aspire Eden Prairie 2040. Public art is one of the elements identified in the Aspire plan’s vision for the future of Eden Prairie, with focus groups and workshops identifying desired locations for public art installations throughout the City.
