Water Meter Replacement Project

The City is replacing residential water meters in every home throughout Eden Prairie.

The new water meters allow residents to monitor their household water use with the Eye On Water mobile app/online portal, which helps with water conservation, identifying leaks and saving money on water bills. New features include:

Access to a customizable dashboard showing water usage and reports
Phone alerts for possible water leaks or unusual water use
Precipitation and temperature monitoring to help manage lawn irrigation
Recommendations to reduce water use
Ability to monitor water consumption when away from home

Water meters are being replaced at no cost and the City's contractor, HydroCorp, is performing all notifications, installations and scheduling of appointments. Mailed notifications will include instructions for scheduling installation appointments by phone or online.

- Do I need to do anything to prepare for my water meter replacement?
  - Make sure your water meter and radio transceiver are unobstructed and accessible.
  - Ensure the water shut-off valves located on either side of the water meter are operable prior to the scheduled appointment. This video provides tips for checking your shut-off valves.
  - If your shut-off valve(s) leak or fail during the meter replacement visit, it is the property owner’s responsibility to replace or repair the valve(s). The City will not pay for repairs or perform the work. If the technician is unable to exchange the meter system due to accessibility problems or because of obvious deterioration of the valves, the appointment will need to be rescheduled after the necessary repairs have been made.
- How can I monitor my household's water usage after the new meter is installed?
  The customer portal associated with the new water meter is called EyeOnWater.

  Please Note: When you sign up for EyeOnWater, you'll be asked for your "Account Number" which equates to the "Customer Number" on your utility bill.

- When will my water meter be replaced?
  The water meter replacement project is being completed in phases beginning in spring 2021 and could take up to three years.
  
  The City's contractor, HydroCorp, is contacting homeowners with mailings when it is time to schedule an appointment. You do not need to do anything until you hear from HydroCorp.
- Where is my water meter?
  
  Your meter is located inside your house, about 1 foot off of your basement floor. It could also be in a crawl space, pit in the floor or utility room. It is not outside.
  
  The water usually comes in from the street side of the house. The meter is oriented horizontally and is plumbed into the incoming water pipe that normally comes up through the floor or wall. The head of the meter is about 3 inches in diameter and has both a large and small red hand.
- Who will be replacing my water meter?
  The City has contracted with HydroCorp, Inc. to replace water meters.
  
  A HydroCorp technician will be on-site at your property for approximately 45 minutes to change out the water meter and perform the water safety survey. The technician will be wearing a HydroCorp company shirt and identified as an authorized City contractor with a City of Eden Prairie photo ID badge, and will wear appropriate personal protective equipment to protect you and your family from Coronavirus.
- Why is the City replacing water meters?
  The existing water meters are nearing the end of their useful lives and the radio batteries are beginning to fail. To continue metering water and providing a high level of customer service, the meters need to be replaced.
- Will I have to pay anything to have my water meter replaced?
  No, water meters are being replaced free of charge. You will not need to pay anything to have your water meter replaced.
  
  However, if your shut-off valve(s) leak or fail during the meter replacement visit, it is the property owner’s responsibility to replace or repair the valve(s). If the technician is unable to exchange the meter system due to accessibility problems or because of obvious deterioration of the valves, the appointment will need to be rescheduled after the necessary repairs have been made.
