Tree Disputes

At times trees can be a source of dispute among neighbors, in most cases the City cannot help resolve these disagreements.

The following resources may be useful to assist with vegetation management and property boundaries:

  • The University of Minnesota Extension has published A Layperson's Guide on Trees and Minnesota Law. Common issues that are addressed include hazard trees, nuisance trees (encroaching branches and tree roots), damage to trees, and Utility trimming.
  • Property boundary lines can be estimated using the online Hennepin County Property Map
  • The City's Building Inspections Division can provide a paper copy of the survey associated with your property for free (or a small fee in some cases). Property surveys must be requested at the City Center in person. Contact the Building Inspections Division with questions.
  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA)
  • The City of Eden Prairie fallen tree policy states any tree debris that falls from a healthy and sound tree (as determined by a certified/qualified arborist) shall be cleaned up by the property owner/manager of the land on which it falls.
