Social Media Policy

The City of Eden Prairie uses social media sites to provide two-way communication with the public.

The City of Eden Prairie welcomes participation and comments from the public on its social media sites. However, the City reserves the right to hide and/or delete comments that are not protected speech under the First Amendment, including the following:

  • Posts and comments that defame or threaten another
  • Comments that directly promote or advocate discrimination on the basis of creed, color, age, religion, gender, marital status, national origin, physical or mental disability, or sexual orientation
  • Spam or duplicate comments posted repeatedly within a short period of time
  • Advertisements for commercial services or goods
  • Posts and comments that advocate violence or illegal activity
  • Obscene or sexual content, or links to obscene or sexual content
  • Information that could compromise the safety or security of the public or public systems
  • Content that contains images or other content that violate the intellectual property or copyright rights of someone else
  • Comments that contain a hyperlink to any website other than those controlled by the City or other government agency

Comments are not hidden or deleted solely because they are critical of the City of Eden Prairie or its officials.

Data Practices and Records Retention: To the extent that any content on social media is government data, such data is retained according to government data records retention laws. Comments which are hidden or deleted are also retained or archived pursuant to the City’s records retention policy.

Blocking/Banning Users: When a user has been determined to have violated the terms and conditions of this policy on three or more occasions within a 12-month rolling period, the offending user may be blocked or banned from the City’s social media accounts.

Please Note: Comments expressed on the City’s social networking sites do not reflect the opinions or positions of the City of Eden Prairie, its employees or elected officials.

In the event of an emergency, call 9-1-1 for a Police, Fire or EMS response. The City of Eden Prairie cannot guarantee a timely emergency response to comments posted on social media sites.
