Donald Doherty enlisted in the U.S. Army on Oct. 18, 1943. He served with the 9316th Technical Ordnance Department, stationed in New Guinea.

He became a commissioned Warrant Officer Junior Grade on Aug. 8, 1945 until his discharge on Feb. 8, 1946.

Doherty was awarded the U.S. Army Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic - Pacific Campaign Medal with one bronze star (battle), World War II Victory Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar and the Honorable Service Lapel Pin.
