Richard (Rick) Kubal enlisted in the U.S. Navy via the Delayed Entry Program and the Buddy Program with his best friend, Chuck Luttrell, while they were seniors at J.F. Kennedy High School in Bloomington, Minn.

On Aug. 25, 1978, they entered the U.S. Navy and received Recruit Training in Orlando, Fla., both graduating with advancements.
