Captain Jack E. Hill

Captain Jack E. HillJack Hill was born in Biwabik on Minnesota’s Iron Range in May 1942, raised in rural Tower and graduated from Embarrass High School in 1960. He attended Virginia Junior College and the University of Minnesota prior to enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Jack began flight training in Pensacola, Fla. as a marine aviation cadet in August 1964. He received his wings in July 1966, and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant. His first duty station was MCAS Cherry Point, N.C., where he was assigned to VMFA-201. Jack served as an instructor pilot for F-4B and F-4J flight crews until December 1968.

On New Year's Day 1969, Jack arrived in Danang, Republic of South Vietnam, assigned to VMFA-542, MAG 11, 1st MAW and flying F-4Bs. During his tour, he flew 123 combat missions. His bombing missions included close air support of troops under fire and direct air support against tactical targets, such as supply routes, enemy encampments and enemy artillery sites. He also flew fighter cove for B-52 strikes and provided escort support for photo missions across southern North Vietnam and night bombing missions on the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos.

After leaving the Marine Corps, Jack returned to the University of Minnesota where he received his Bachelor of Science in Business degree.
