Max Smith, originally born in Cedar Lake, Minn., settled in Eden Prairie with his parents, John and Annie, along with eight siblings.

He entered service for World War I in the U.S. Army serving as an interpreter with the 326th Infantry Company M.

He was killed Sept. 17, 1918, in St. Mihiel, France.
