EPCC lifesaving award

At last night’s City Council meeting, six people were recognized for saving the life of a man who experienced a cardiac event while exercising at the Eden Prairie Community Center March 8, 2023.

Community Center employees Alisa Hoang, Marie Goergen, Jill Bickler, Doug Tucker and Nate Storey, along with EPCC patron Matt Johnson received a Letter of Recognition from Police Chief Matt Sackett.

On the afternoon of March 8, 2023, Peter Graff was on a stationary bike at the Community Center when he experienced a cardiac event and fell off the bike. Alisa Hoang, an off-duty EPCC fitness instructor, witnessed him fall and immediately called for help. EPCC Fitness Leads Marie Goergen and Jill Bickler raced over and began moving the bikes that were impeding their access to Peter. In addition, they checked his vitals and called 911.

EPCC patron Matt Johnson noticed the commotion and retrieved a nearby AED along with Marie. Recreation Supervisor Doug Tucker and Recreation Specialist Nate Storey also arrived on the scene. Matt, Doug and Nate performed CPR and administered shocks using the AED. By the time officers arrived, Peter had received four shocks from the AED. Peter received three additional shocks by officers and firefighters. He was then taken by gurney to an ambulance where he began speaking to paramedics.

EPCC save with officersChief Sackett noted that thanks to the quick-thinking of these six individuals, Peter is alive and well. The EPCC staff relied on their training, remained calm and worked together to stay focused on saving Peter’s life. Patron Matt Johnson jumped into action as soon as he saw Peter needed help. His actions were selfless and vital in assisting the EPCC staff.

The EPPD would like to congratulate and thank these six individuals for their lifesaving actions.
