Take Pledge to Conserve Water
Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens is once again challenging Eden Prairie residents to conserve water, energy and natural resources by participating in the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. Presented nationally by the Wyland Foundation and Toyota, this free online contest is a friendly competition between cities across the nation to see who can be the most “water-wise.”
Throughout the month of April, Tyra-Lukens encourages residents to pledge online at mywaterpledge.com on behalf of Eden Prairie, and promise to follow a series of conservation measures for their homes, yards and cars, such as washing only full loads of laundry, fixing leaky faucets, and walking or biking short distances.
“By participating in the challenge, Eden Prairie residents are demonstrating that our community is actively engaged in saving water, and recognizes that water conservation and other sustainable practices are necessary to maintain the high quality of life we all enjoy in Eden Prairie,” said Tyra-Lukens.
Students and teachers can take part in the pledge, too, by visiting mywaterpledge.com/kids. Once there, teachers can download lesson plans on water conservation, make pledges on behalf of their class and enter to win classroom supplies and gift cards for their school.
Eden Prairie will compete in the Midwest region, versus other cities with similar populations (30,000-99,000). Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge in their population categories are entered into drawings for hundreds of eco-friendly prizes, including home improvement gift cards, home irrigation equipment and a grand prize Toyota Prius.
Ideas for what residents can do to conserve our natural resources are available on the mywaterpledge.com website and in the Sustainable Eden Prairie section of the City's website. To learn more about Eden Prairie's Water Conservation Rebate Programs, visit edenprairie.org/waterrebates.
Tyra-Lukens’ commitment to the conservation of Eden Prairie’s natural resources led to the formation of the City’s Conservation Commission, launching the successfully completed 20-40-15 initiative, participation in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program and receiving an honorable mention for the 2011 Mayors’ Climate Protection Awards. In its inaugural year, Eden Prairie won the Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation for the Midwest region.
The sixth annual National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is presented by the Wyland Foundation and Toyota, with support from the U.S. EPA, The Toro Company, National League of Cities, Conserva Irrigation and Earth Friendly Products (makers of ECOS).
The 2017 national kickoff will take place 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday, April 3, at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. Our state will also be the launching pad for the Wyland Foundation’s “Rolling Down the Mississippi Tour,” a monthlong water conservation educational initiative along the Mississippi River watershed.
